Overview
Parathyroid carcinoma is a very rare cancer that grows in one of the four tiny parathyroid glands located in the neck, just behind the thyroid gland. These glands control calcium levels in the blood by making a hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH). When a parathyroid gland becomes cancerous, it usually makes far too much PTH, which causes dangerously high calcium levels in the blood — a condition called hypercalcemia. This is different from the much more common non-cancerous (benign) parathyroid tumors called adenomas. The most noticeable symptoms come from the high calcium levels rather than the tumor itself. People often feel extremely tired, nauseated, confused, or have bone pain and kidney problems. Kidney stones are very common. Bones can become weak and break more easily. Some people develop a lump in the neck that a doctor can feel. Treatment usually involves surgery to remove the cancerous gland along with nearby tissue. Because this cancer is so rare, it is often not recognized right away. With early surgery, many people do well, but the cancer can come back, sometimes years later. Medications to control calcium levels are also an important part of care. This condition is sometimes called parathyroid cancer or malignant parathyroid tumor.
