Genomic Therapy Matching in Rare and Refractory Cancers.

WHY IT MATTERS

If you have a rare or treatment-resistant cancer, this research suggests that genetic testing of your tumor could help your doctor choose a therapy specifically matched to your cancer's mutations, potentially improving your survival chances.

Researchers studied whether matching cancer treatments to a patient's genetic test results helps people with hard-to-treat advanced cancers live longer. They looked at data from over 1,000 Australian patients with different types of advanced solid tumors who received personalized treatment recommendations based on their tumor's genetic makeup. The study used a ranking system to organize genetic matches by how much scientific evidence supported each match, and then tracked how long patients survived.

Genomic Therapy Matching in Rare and Refractory Cancers. Abstract: The clinical utility of matching therapies to genomic biomarkers based on varying levels of evidence remains uncertain, particularly for patients with rare and refractory cancers. To assess whether a tiered, evidence-based framework for matching genomic biomarkers to therapies is associated with differential overall survival in patients with advanced solid tumors. This multicenter cohort study was conducted within the Molecular Screening and Therapeutic program, a nationwide precision oncology program in Australia. Patients aged 18 years and older with advanced, refractory solid tumors and adequate Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status were enrolled from June 2016 to December 2021, with follow-up through July 2022. Data were analyzed from July 2022 to July 2024. Systemic th Authors: Lin et al.
