The Role of Digital Tools and Their Implementation Within Patient Care Pathways for Rare Brain Disorders: The Case of Phenylketonuria.

WHY IT MATTERS

If you have PKU or care for someone with PKU, this research identifies which digital tools patients actually want and need to manage their condition better and communicate with their healthcare team.

Researchers studied how digital tools like telemedicine and online apps can help patients with phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare genetic disorder affecting how the body processes certain proteins. They surveyed PKU patients and doctors in Spain, Germany, and Ireland to understand what digital tools work best for managing this condition that requires regular check-ups and careful monitoring. The study shows that digital health tools became more important during COVID-19 and can help patients stay connected with their doctors and learn more about their condition.

The Role of Digital Tools and Their Implementation Within Patient Care Pathways for Rare Brain Disorders: The Case of Phenylketonuria. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital health solutions in healthcare. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare condition requiring chronic management and frequent assessments, making it a useful model for examining how digital health tools support patient and caregiver education, communication with healthcare professionals and facilities, and patient care pathways. Patient representatives and expert clinicians developed qualitative, co-designed ad hoc surveys during virtual workshops. From October 2023 to March 2024, the surveys were available online through EUSurvey English, Spanish, and German, and distributed to PKU patients in Spain, Germany, and Ireland by national PKU patient associations. The survey co-design process identified crucial topics significant to key stakeholde Authors: Cannizzo et al.
