Overview

Rare disorders related to pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium (the period after giving birth) are a broad group of uncommon medical conditions that occur specifically during or because of pregnancy, labor, delivery, or the weeks following birth. These conditions can affect the mother's body in many different ways, including problems with blood clotting, the heart, the liver, the kidneys, the nervous system, or the immune system. Because pregnancy places unique demands on nearly every organ system, some women develop complications that are extremely unusual outside of pregnancy. Symptoms vary widely depending on the specific condition but may include unusual bleeding, severe high blood pressure, organ failure, seizures, extreme fatigue, or infections that do not respond to standard treatment. Some of these disorders resolve after delivery or during the postpartum recovery period, while others may have lasting effects on the mother's health. Treatment depends on the exact diagnosis and may range from close monitoring and supportive care to emergency interventions such as early delivery, blood transfusions, surgery, or intensive care. Because these conditions are rare, they often require a team of specialists including maternal-fetal medicine doctors, hematologists, cardiologists, and other experts. Early recognition and prompt treatment are essential to protect both the mother and baby.
