Overview
Lethal chondrodysplasia, Seller type (also known as Seller lethal chondrodysplasia) is an extremely rare and severe skeletal disorder that was historically described in a very small number of cases. The term "OBSOLETE" in its classification indicates that this condition has been reclassified or merged with another diagnosis in modern medical databases, meaning it may now be recognized under a different name or considered part of a broader group of lethal skeletal dysplasias. Chondrodysplasias are conditions that affect the development of cartilage and bone, leading to abnormal skeletal growth. In the lethal forms, the skeletal abnormalities are so severe that they are incompatible with life, typically resulting in stillbirth or death shortly after birth. Affected babies may show extremely short limbs, a small chest that restricts lung development, and other skeletal malformations visible on prenatal ultrasound or at birth. Because this specific subtype is obsolete and was described in only a handful of cases, very little is known about its precise genetic cause or whether any treatments could modify its course. Families who have received this diagnosis historically should consult with a clinical geneticist to determine the current classification and whether modern genetic testing can provide a more specific diagnosis.
