Overview

Chronic muscular fatigue and/or chronic muscle pain is a term that has been used to describe a condition where a person experiences ongoing tiredness in their muscles and/or persistent muscle pain that does not go away with normal rest. It is important to note that this diagnosis code has been marked as 'OBSOLETE' in the Orphanet classification system, meaning it is no longer considered a distinct, standalone rare disease category. Instead, patients who were previously classified under this term may now fall under more specific diagnoses such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome (also called myalgic encephalomyelitis), various myopathies, or other neuromuscular or rheumatological conditions. The main symptoms include muscles that feel tired or weak even without heavy physical activity, widespread or localized muscle pain, difficulty performing everyday tasks due to muscle discomfort, and a general sense of physical exhaustion. Some people also experience sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes related to their ongoing pain and fatigue. Because this is an obsolete classification, patients who have been given this label should work with their doctors to determine a more specific and up-to-date diagnosis. Treatment depends entirely on the underlying cause and may include physical therapy, pain management, medications, lifestyle changes, and psychological support. Getting the right diagnosis is the most important step toward finding effective treatment.
