Overview
Genetic difference of sex development (DSD) of gynecological interest refers to a group of rare conditions where a person's reproductive or sexual anatomy does not follow typical male or female development due to genetic causes. These conditions are sometimes called disorders of sex development or differences of sex development. They specifically affect structures of gynecological importance, such as the uterus, ovaries, vagina, and fallopian tubes. People with these conditions may have differences in how their internal or external reproductive organs formed, which can become apparent at birth, during puberty, or later in life when investigating issues like absent periods, difficulty with fertility, or unusual physical development. The symptoms and severity vary widely depending on the specific underlying genetic cause. Some individuals may have a uterus that did not fully develop, absent or streak ovaries, an incomplete vagina, or ambiguous external genitalia. Others may appear typically female on the outside but have internal differences discovered only during medical evaluation. Hormonal imbalances may also occur, affecting puberty, menstrual cycles, and fertility. Treatment depends on the specific condition and the individual's needs and goals. Options may include hormone replacement therapy to support puberty and bone health, surgical procedures to create or reconstruct reproductive structures, psychological support, and fertility counseling. A multidisciplinary team approach is considered the standard of care, involving geneticists, gynecologists, endocrinologists, psychologists, and sometimes surgeons. Early diagnosis and compassionate, patient-centered care are essential for the best outcomes and quality of life.
