Overview
Cataract-hypertrichosis-intellectual disability syndrome (also known as Cataract-hypertrichosis-mental retardation syndrome) is an extremely rare genetic disorder characterized by the triad of congenital or early-onset cataracts, excessive hair growth (hypertrichosis), and intellectual disability of variable severity. The condition was first described in a small number of families, and very few cases have been reported in the medical literature. The syndrome primarily affects the eyes, skin/hair, and central nervous system. Cataracts, which are opacities of the lens of the eye, typically present early in life and can significantly impair vision if left untreated. Hypertrichosis manifests as generalized or localized excessive body hair growth. Intellectual disability ranges from mild to moderate and may be accompanied by developmental delay. Additional features reported in some patients include short stature and other minor dysmorphic features, though the clinical spectrum is not fully delineated due to the rarity of the condition. There is currently no specific cure or targeted therapy for this syndrome. Management is supportive and symptom-based. Cataracts may be treated surgically to preserve or restore vision. Hypertrichosis can be managed with cosmetic approaches such as hair removal techniques. Intellectual disability and developmental delays are addressed through early intervention programs, special education, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. Regular ophthalmologic follow-up is recommended to monitor for visual complications. Genetic counseling is advised for affected families.
